Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat on Monday laid the foundation stone of Lakhwar hydro electric power project. The 300 MW project, which is worth Rs. 4,000 crore, will meet the power requirement in Uttarakhand apart from providing irrigation and drinking water to New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan & Himachal Pradesh.
Located in the upper Yamuna river basin, the ambitious project will see the light of the day after 28 years. Environment clearance was provided to 420 MW Lakhwar Vyasi hydroelectric power project in 1986. Prior to the creation of Uttarakhand, the project was under the Uttar - Pradesh Irrigation Department and work on it continued till 1992.
